In the traditional lessons aspects like e.g. proportion, light-dark logic (chiaroscuro), sketching and painting techniques will be the subject. Short and longer excercises in different techniques and materials will give you a better understanding of traditional image making wich functions as a valuable basic also in the more modernistic, avant garde and conceptual art treatment

In your starting lessons we will hold on to short (unfinished) excercises because of this the learning curve will be more steep.
Afterwards longer, the more complex, studies are introduced.

This Monday evening, Wednesday morning and Friday morning
Participants will do eather shor or long excercises this week in drawing and or painting. According to your experience and preferences we will concentrate on:

1) Perspective and the construction of the ellipse (circel in persepective)
Although some of you will like to work for period in just one material/ technique others want to deepen their knowledge of setting up a perspective 'correct' still life. The simple perspective guidelines for setting up an ellipse (circle in perspective) will be a possible subject.

2) How to mix the colour you see? Colour mix excercises in the material of your choice in a still life setup.
For those who like to continue in oil paint material studies it's advised to start oilpaint mixing colours excercises: looking at the colours in the still life and try to mix them in sequential steps explained in the lesson.

3) Your very own project.
It is possible and encouraged to formulate your own project. The teacher will guide you in your drawing and painting process. It's possible to bring and leave your own canvas and materials or use the materials supplied by the studio.

Next to the traditional lessons classes are given with the focus on the experiment. Drawing and painting is more or less making combinations of signs on a surface wich can tell a personal story or concept. Putting yourself into learning boundaries of image making aspects as a goal for learning and understanding these aspects is a way of collecting tools in your image making toolbox.

A suggestion for those who want to express themself during Portraiture and Life drawing/ painting:
Examine the color palette, brush stroke, composition, technique of some German Expressionsist and let your inspire yourself by there self-learned technique of early 20th. century.

Lessons in 'natural & experimental'
life drawing/ painting by Ruben Schwartz.

Impression of Ruben Schwartz: 'Drawing my beautiful son'

Drawing and watching are connected. Even without any art ambitions it can give a lot of pleasure to learn to watch better. We are actualy quiet blind for the surrounding world. Our perception of things stands in the way of our observation. Learning to observe better, for example by drawing, triggers more in a human being than just producing a drawing.
Different methods of learning to watch or draw exist ; More exact methods where you learn about proportions, structures, perspective, tone, color etc with mainly a cognitive approach. Apart from that there are more free methods where you learn to see yourself as the main instrument. Actualy these are about loosing habits rather than acquiring knowledge. This is the way I’ll try to teach. Try, because in the end you are the one who has to find the freedom to develop a personal style. I will give directions, but practicing, working, will be the most important.
We will work with life figures/ models.

Atelier visit artist Urban Larsson on Sunday November 22th. 11.30 - 12.30naar boven

Sunday November 22th. 11.30 - 12.30 Visiting artist Urban Larsson in his atelier/ studio (the former studio of George Hendrik Breitner).

sign up & info: info@petereurlings.nl of 0642971097

A unique oppertunity to visit an artist in his own 'secret' studio to look and experience the tradtional 19th. century setup of a painters studio.

It's not usual that artists open their atelier doors for public to give a glimp of their secret kitchen organisation. In the 19th. century the place to show your work in France was the famous yearly govermental organized Salon. It was uncommon to show your work in the shop-window just like the baker or butcher.
Urban Larsson is a contemporary artist working in a 19th. century traditional painting and drawing style/ methode called 'Sight-size' technique.
Would you like to pay a visit to this traditional setup studio and like to question the artist about: lesson possibilities, working methode, pigments, oil paint traditions etcetera then you shouldn't miss this oppertunity. Send an email if you like to join to Peter Eurlings: info@petereurlings.nl
